about PiBlock

The idea behind the PiBlock

In March 2015 I wanted to control a robot arm using the Raspberry Pis. However, I lacked the necessary hardware for this. I couldn't find anything suitable on the Internet either.

As a graduate engineer for technical computer science, I decided to develop my own - after all, that's my daily business. Immediately I was captivated by the idea of developing my own hardware platform and a list of different modules was created in the same month.

One of the main requirements was always the price: after all, it should be implemented privately and therefore inexpensive be. The idea quickly developed to develop a product for many Raspberry Pi users. The market research took half a year. In the end it was clear: Yes, there could be a market for it!

The first PiBlocks

So it started I continue to implement my dream. When searching for a name, I had to accept a few setbacks. But then I found "PiBlock". The name is made up of "Pi" for Raspberry Pi and "Block" for stone. The derivation to stone was found in the building block, functional building block and functional block.

I was finally able to start developing the boards and in September 2016 I applied to the German Patent Office for utility model protection. The first 6 prototypes were implemented just a quarter of a year later. But almost a year passed before the first start-up.

When I presented the concept and the products at various trade fairs, many were enthusiastic and wanted to support me with the implementation. That gave me impetus and with my family in the back I registered a trade.

Backward step and the look forward

But finding partners was more difficult than expected. From the series everyone wanted to work with me - but unfortunately not during the prototype and pilot series. I found a partner for the prototype, but shortly after it was completed, we parted ways and I was about to throw everything out. My wife confirmed my belief in the project and I took new courage.

I used my 20 years of professional experience in the field of hardware development to find a new partner - with success!

The shop is open

At the beginning of 2019 I asked the IHK Plauen about funding advise for start-ups. I came across the Reichenbach agency eckpunkt, which in turn introduced me to Ellipsis - a company for corporate development and thus funding agencies. This was followed by further meetings, consultations and workshops, which ultimately resulted in this shop.

Pretty exactly five years after the first idea, I was able to fulfill my dream. I hope you enjoy the PiBlocks and many exciting projects!

Your Carsten Thomas
